LIKE A CRESCENT MOON LAID OUT UPON THE EARTH
They
had cut down the tall grasses and wildflowers that grow in the fields. I
suppose it is usually cut once or twice in the summer by the farmer. Much was
left, but perhaps five acres was cut. Of maybe ten acres out there, five was
cut, and the dogs anyhow loved it because they sprinted right away and began
running then in circles and circles, then jumping and talking and being
generally free and joyous. A lot of spiders and insects must have lost their
homes though as those or that tractor went through. Well, there were less mosquitoes
trying to get at me, - in fact I only remember fighting off one deer fly or
something now that I think upon it.
How
wonderful to arrive there and have nobody around,- to have the entire forest to
ourselves,- just unbelievable,-and I am each time sort of awestruck by it,-
almost like the first day,- over four years ago. I think more people go in the
mornings, and then the early afternoons are left for others.
The normal things
were there- flaxen land, the barn way across the way,- the shaded valley, the
summits, the
inclines, little rivers and fallen over trees, trees still
standing, birches, oaks, pines, others. I saw some bees, working, but the
pictures did not come out. We went slowly, but we went far, - and drew a wide
circle with our walk along a curving path that brings us around like a crescent
moon laid out upon the earth.
Overhead,
the light blue sky and the clouds still and patient and pensive and knowing. I
wondered where the snakes went, where the rabbit went, where things like that
went. It was quiet.
Warm, but not oppressively hot, and a small breeze came
from somewhere like a spirit and gently lifted up the wheat and stalks and wild
grasses green. Pausing, they ran around somewhere and I got lost in some dream
of something or other. Then, coming out of this reverie or wish or vision, - I
came back to where I was, - and they, by my side, faithful friend always,
awaited my cue. Let’s go, friends, - lets go now…let’s begin to make our way
back home.
